As a critical service provider with 6,500 employees and a distribution area of 55,500 square kilometres, National Grid Electricity Distribution need to ensure their fleet is kept moving, so their engineers can access crucial infrastructure and meet customers’ needs.
The business needed to improve the performance of its vehicles in off-road conditions, to support engineers working on remote rural infrastructure. Their vehicles would often struggle with the wide range of terrain they faced, and 4×4 alternatives didn’t offer the equipment-carrying capacity of its fleet of vans.

We were delighted to be able to rise to the challenge and deliver a suitable solution. After learning about National Grid Electricity Distribution’s challenge, we partnered with General Tire to develop the General Grabber AT3 tyre – compatible with vans and suitable for driving on public roads as well as off-road.
As Micheldever Tyre Services has exclusive distribution rights for General Tire, we were able to respond, providing a solution for National Grid Electricity Distribution, as well as additional van sizes of the General Tire Grabber AT3 to support the wider all-terrain market.
We worked with General Tire to ensure the new tyre provided the correct load index to accommodate the modifications needed to National Grid vehicles, enabling its engineers to safely carry the parts, cabling and tools needed to undertake their work.
